Integrated Design 3

This project was different from others because we had to design the building without having the site or site context. This project started with choosing a material to work with, which mine became precast concrete. We started with researching the material as well as construction methods. Each part of the project focused on something different, the first part was morphology, the second was enclosure, the third was energy and the last was assembly.

Part 2: Enclosure

The second evolution of this project was adding a skin to the building, the enclosure. We were asked to incorporate daylight systems, daylight modifiers, and opaque thermal enclosure and system to reach R20. We had to define a cardinal direction to ensure we were utilizing the strategies efficiently.

Part 3: Energy

The third evolution of this project was to add energy to the building, utilizing photovoltaic systems and solar thermal systems to ensure 200,000kwh/year. Double checked the picked cardinal direction still works for this kind of system.

Part 4: Assembly

The last evolution of this project, assembly, gave us the location of this project-which was Detroit, Michigan just south of the MOCAD building. We then had to adapt the building that we had designed in the previous 3 evolutions to fit the site and site context. I began playing with precast concrete in a fabric like design for the facade. I began doing a lot of fabric studies and trying to figure out how I could utilize gravity and weights to create a fabric mold that I could use to create precast concrete panels that resembled folding curtains. Those curtains at moments uncovered the curtain wall underneath and showed the activities happening inside.
